Revue, the ESP made solely for publishers, not e-commerce: Q&A

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Revue is an editorial newsletter tool created exclusively for writers and publishers. Headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and with clients based worldwide, the solution offers an easy-to-use authoring interface surrounded by a suite of useful features designed to help publishers maximize the impact of their newsletters. WNIP caught up with Revue’s Founder Martijn de Kuijper to find out more…

Can you give us some background about your company?

Revue is a journalism tech startup from The Netherlands. We offer an innovative editor for editorial email, specifically built for publishers. A few years ago, we played a key role in launching the paid newsletter craze and today our suite of tools is used by dozens of publishers around the world, among them Vox Media, Venture Beat and The Chicago Sun-Times.

What business problem is your company addressing?

Email is an incredibly powerful platform for publishers. It drives engagement, conversion and retention. But many publishers today work with ill-suited marketing tools for editorial email, so we set out to change that. Revue is email made for publishers. Our tool allows small and large publishing companies to create, send and monetize editorial email. We offer a suite of publisher perfected analytics and monetization tools, built around an editor writers love.

What is your core product addressing the problem?

Revue’s email editor and insights features make it a delight to craft emails, share content and grow an audience of loyal, engaged readers. One senior editor at one of our customers told me recently: “If all tools were as easy to use, journalism would be much better off.”

We’ve also just launched a suite of new email analytics tools for editorial newsletters. These new dashboards allow any email product manager and any newsletter creator to check what really matters: How they engage their audience. This metric of engaged readers is far more useful than traditional email metrics. It’s a metric publishers already use on their websites and their apps, and now they can use this success metric for email, too.

Can you give some examples of publishers successfully using your solution?

We work with publishers large and small, some look to monetize their following in a new way, such as Matt Navarra, others are trying to boost engagement and conversion, such as Germany’s Madsack which launched 8 newsletters in a matter of days with us, some create an even deeper connection to their most loyal audiences, such as Vox Media whose Casey Newton set a gold standard for direct journalist-reader-relationships.

Pricing?

You can get started at as low as $5 dollars a month for a Pro plan. Our publishing plans offer a custom design, advanced insights and monetization tools. They start at $160 per month.

What are other people doing in the space and why?

Revue is unique in that it is made specifically for publishers, offers a free custom design plus a variety of monetization and insights tools. It offers tools and features to accommodate all business models, not only subscriptions.

How do you view the future?

Email is not even close to the end of its growth journey. Publishers will integrate this publishing platform deeper into their strategies, and they will create even more exciting email products and will need a tool set to accommodate that. This serves a user need – readers love great email products – and a business goal: direct relationships with customers.

Anything else we should know?

Thank you.
